To search the database by subject, you need to know the codes. These were developed several years ago for a very different purpose, but they serve well enough for this database. The codes divide the database into very broad categories. In most cases these should be sufficient.
Almost all subject codes follow the pattern LLLLN -- letter, letter, letter, letter, number. Those prior to 1994 may be LLL or LLLN. You can use truncation to take care of that.

For example UREM3, would be Russia, economic, mining, Far East. There are 2 deviations from the general rule. Asia is AS for region-country, and Russia is UR for region-country.
The regions-countries are list together below and the category-subcategory listings follow.
The indicators follow 3 different patterns. They just have to be memorized. In most cases, they represent Siberia and the Far East (see the last below), but in some cases they have a special meaning. These special cases are noted in the category-subcategory listing, where the indicators are included below the subcategories to which they apply.
This explanation may sound complicated, but if you look at the tables, it should be obvious.
Here are some examples:
NCPI - China, politics, international
URSC3 - Russia, social, crime, Far East
URMSI - Russia, security, arms sales, to India
PAEI - Pacific, Australia, economic, industry
SVER - Southeast Asia, Vietnam, economic, trade
URET1 - Russia, economic, transport, air
URSN1 - Russia, social, minorities, native peoples
Say you want everything on forestry -- UREH* (The * is used for truncation). That means it will get you UREH1, UREH2, UREH3. If you are only interested in forestry in the Far East -- UREH3.
Say you are interested in diamond mining in Sakha -- UREM3.
FISHING all comes under one subject heading -- UREG
Sometimes you just have to hunt around.
