How do Asian countries rank in terms of their global competitiveness?
The original concept for measuring competitiveness was developed in 1979 by Klaus Schwab at the World Economic Forum (WEF), which launched the World Competitiveness Report in 1980.
Between 1989 and 1995, Geneva-based WEF published the report jointly with the International Institute for Management Development (IMD) of Lausanne. The two organisations have ended their partnership on the project - each is now producing its own country competitiveness study from this year.
The WEF launches a new Global Competitiveness Report while IMD continues with the World Competitiveness Report.
The 1996 World Competitiveness Report compares and ranks 46 countries using 225 criteria under eight broad factors. Two-thirds of the factors are based on hard published data, and the rest drawn from an opinion survey of some 3,200 executives around the world.
